A Long Day

It was 0800 when we untied the dock lines at Turner Marine yesterday.  The plan was to stop at Pirates Cove near Pensacola,  which was approximately a 60 mile trip.  The guide book said, "Pirates Cove is a MUST STOP anchorage for fun loving cruisers".  Just our kind of place!

We had a fantastic sail across Mobile Bay where we entered the Gulf Intercoastal Waterway  (GIWW) and motored the rest of the way to Pirates Cove.  As advertised,   there was a funky restaurant that looked like a fun place.  We anchored and put the dinghy down but before we went over we checked the weather forcast for the next few days.   Since our next trip was going to be an overnight passage to Panama City, we wanted to look for the right weather window.   It looked like we would be waiting for days if we didn't leave right then so we pulled up the anchor and carried on.

Panama City was another 90 miles from there.

We left the GIWW at Pensacola and entered the Gulf of Mexico just as the sun was setting and we had a great down-wind run.  It was an uneventful night and at 0800 this morning we were entering the Panama City Inlet.  To our delight, we were greeted by dolphins to guide us in.  (Another pinch me moment).

Words cannot discribe how tired we were when we finally set the hook just inside the inlet but we soon perked up when more dolphins came over.  It felt like the dolphin welcoming committee.  I can't believe I caught this wonderful shot of one jumping out of the water....and that was taken with my point and shoot Olympus camera.

Harley is just about ready to jump in the water.  It's another glorious day.  We plan to stay another day to rest and check this place out....but more about that...next time.

  1. So I was reading your post and thinking to myself that you must not sleep when you do a night run like that...and sure enough the next bit was you saying how tired you were. Wow Janice. So then how do you catch up? Small naps, or a long dead to the world sleeping like a log snooze. It keeps you on your toes, this sailing business hey? Loving the shots. Wow. N,x

  2. We take turns sailing through the night but neither one of us slept much .... if at all. We've been napping today but I find that hard too because I don't want to miss anything. Haha
